This list accounts for entries posted since 14 June 2024 of addenda and corrigenda common to the two parts of the revised edition of The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide (Chronology in one volume, and Reader’s Guide in two). Elsewhere on this site may be read a comprehensive list of common addenda and corrigenda; addenda and corrigenda specific to vol. 1, the Chronology, arranged by date; and addenda and corrigenda specific to vols. 2 and 3 , the Reader’s Guide, arranged by date. Significant revisions of addenda or corrigenda (as opposed to revisions of the Companion and Guide proper), but not merely additions, are marked thus: [REVISED]. Hyperlinks are included selectively, to lead to further (especially pictorial) material; for additional links, and full bibliographical citations, see the supplemental bibliography.
Preface, p. xiv, first paragraph: It occurs to us that, being so close to Tolkien’s works and literature about them (although this will be true also of many of our readers), we may have taken too great a liberty in the Reader’s Guide in referring to ‘The Silmarillion’ as Tolkien’s ‘legendarium’ or ‘mythology’ without making it sufficiently clear that these are frequent synonyms for ‘The Silmarillion’; and therefore, it seems good to add a note to our introduction that this was our usage. If we had been more careful, we might have used legendarium for the body of stories and poems which make up ‘The Silmarillion’ and mythology for the body of created places, peoples, events, and so forth.
